The IU Computer Gaming Club is hosting it's 10th Lanwar April 8-9, 2006 in Bloomington, IN. The last lanwar was regrettably held on the same date as the asylumlan, but we did our research so that they wouldn't overlap this year. We are expecting 200 people for this event, so it would be our biggest ever. Cost is $15 which includes dinner and chances to win swag. We also have a twinkie eating contest and a dance-off, which will include some of the worst dancing known to man. Our website is www.iugaming.com. Hit us up if you have any questions.

UPDATE: REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN

Registration is starting to pick up for this event guys. Like Shred said, we're looking to get about 200 people and we already have some Indy Gamers and the Stompfest staff is looking to make an appearance.

Come check us out and I know you will have a great time!!!

I thought the name "LANWAR" was already taken....

And considering the new corporate interest in Lanwar, you may want to modify the name a bit...

We have been calling our event "lanwar" since before the better known lanwar event even took place some years ago.

We get flak every year about it and too tell you the truth, I'm not an official officer of the IUCGC but just a promoter. I have brought this up to the officers in the past.

Anyway, don't let the name of our event hold you back from coming if you are interested. We have had ten very successful LAN's now ((not counting the countless smaller events)) and this one will be the biggest.

Thanks for reading,

The Bloomington Lanwar has been around since before April of 1998??  If so, a very big congrats as most LAN parties don't last near as long.

Unfortunately, I *really* would consider changing the name.  The Lanwar in Louisville is a corporation.  As in, not just a LAN that gets put together by people who thought up a catchy name.  Louisville-Lanwar I'm almost positive has a copywrite on that name as a result.

Not trying to crap on your LAN as I'm sure it's a great time.  Especially if you guys have been around for longer than 8 years.  All that I, and others in the past, are suggesting, is that you consider changing the name to avoid issues in the future.  Sir Ty is right.  Lanwar has just now signed a deal with the CPL to host the World Series of Video Games.  Using their name might become more of an issue this year than it has been in past years.

As far as the "we had the name first" goes.  It really doesn't matter unfortunately. I could come up with a name for a product, and have it around for 50 years.  Someone could hear my name, go and copywrite it, and it would be ME that would be out of luck.  :?  Isn't the Law great?!?!?!

Just looking out for the betterment of your LAN is all.  Having a long time successful LAN in this area is awesome and something I wouldn't want to see end with all the LANs that are dying off now a days.

Good luck with everythiung!

You can't copyright a name, you have to trademark it.  And we know how the trademark of Windows vs. Lindows went.  Granted, Lanwar and Lanwar are a little more alike in name.

Nice spelling in that big post, Smooth.  Looks like you were giving Sarg dictation and he posted it for you.   Tongue

NOTE:  I am not a lawyer.  I do not hold any position of authority within LanWar/MillionManLan.  I work for them and run their DM tournaments.

Regardless as to how long each party has been running, Lanwar Inc. owns the trademark to "Lanwar", and has for quite some time.  From what I recall, the IUCGC was asked to not use that name, and they agreed, or at least seemed to, since I recall seeing the words "lan war" in their later advertisements / postings.  It wasn't a huge deal, and could even be seen as being kind of "picky", depending on your point of view.  It's been within the last year, at least that I've noticed, that their advertisements/postings have gone back to using the word "lanwar" in their event name.

Now that the Lanwar "brand" is attached to the World Series of Video Games, it's going to have to be protected from being used without consent, moreso than in the past.  If Lanwar Inc. decides to make an "official" request for the IUCGC to change their name, it'll be just like any other company trying to protect their brand.  That's just business.

It's a shame it's not this weekend, cause I'd stop by.  I'll be up there to work on my sister-in-law's new computer and to eat up some buffalo and drink some Upland Wheat at the Upland Brewery.  BBQ Buffalo Bacon Burger FTW.

Thanks for the kind comments. We have been having successful events since 1998 and it looks like this next LAN will be just as successful as the others Smiley

As for the name,, I'm really not one to comment on changing it. I'm just the guy that goes out and tries to promote things and bring in the crowds. I also help with all the setup, teardown and everything else. I have brought up changing the name to the others and they are chewing on the idea.

It would be kewl if you guys could swing by and join us in April Smiley Thanks again for the comments and criticisms.
